LIFE ON A CHARTER YACHT - A STORY

The Leeward Islands

The Virgin Islands – US & British Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands should be everyone’s choice for a first Caribbean yacht charter. It is without a doubt, the most popular cruising area in the world. St. Thomas and St. John in the U.S. Virgin islands, plus Tortola and the multitude of surrounding islands of the British Virgin Islands, are all within close proximity to one another. The variety of anchorages and the great number of diving and snorkeling sites can easily be incorporated into a one-week itinerary. Caribbean charters are everywhere but you have to choose well!

The visibility for snorkeling and diving is excellent. Water sports abound, including windsurfing water skiing, wake boarding, ski tubing, kite boarding, and more.

Please note that Jet skis and wet bikes are banned in BVI waters; likewise in National Parks areas in St. John.

Island tours are worth doing on Virgin Gorda, and a rather strenuous trail through the boulders at the Baths is a must. This can be done from the yacht or from land. Two thirds of St. John is National Park, with some of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean. This is why caribbean yacht vacations are gaining more popularity now more than ever.

The VI are blessed with nearly perfect conditions for Caribbean yacht charters year round. During the winter months the prevailing wind is from the NE at 15-20 kts. The fabled “Christmas Winds” (December to March) can produce winds of 23-35kts. for several days at a time. Temperatures average 75-85 degrees year-round.

⚓️ Choosing Your Caribbean Charter Yacht

Selecting the right vessel is the key to crafting your perfect Caribbean experience. While the region is home to every type of luxury yacht, the unique conditions often make one vessel type a clear winner for your specific itinerary and group dynamic.

Sailing Catamaran The Caribbean Champion

For the majority of Caribbean itineraries, the sailing catamaran is the undisputed champion. Their twin-hull design offers exceptional stability and vast, comfortable deck space for socializing and lounging. Most importantly, their shallow draft allows them to anchor closer to the beaches and in the secluded, shallow coves of the BVI, Grenadines, and Bahamas, regions often inaccessible to deeper-draft motor yachts. They deliver a true sailing experience without sacrificing space or amenities.

Motor Yacht Speed, Luxury, and Distance

Motor yachts are the ideal choice when speed and distance are priorities. If your itinerary involves rapid travel between far-flung islands, such as hopping from St. Barths to the Grenadines or covering large areas of the Bahamas, a motor yacht minimizes travel time. They offer the ultimate in high-end luxury, expansive living rooms, and large water-toy garages, making them perfect for those seeking five-star resort amenities afloat.

Monohull Sailing Yacht The Classic Experience

Monohull sailing yachts are favored by those who cherish the pure, authentic experience of sailing. They offer exhilarating performance, especially during the stronger winter trade winds, and provide a deep connection to the nautical tradition. While they offer less volume and a deeper draft than a catamaran, the classic appeal and performance under sail remain the pinnacle of luxury for true sailing enthusiasts.

Tropical Escapes to the Caribbean

Essential Planning for your Caribbean Yacht Charter Seasons, Budgets, and Booking

A luxury yacht charter is a bespoke journey, and the best time and budget depend entirely on your preferences for crowds, weather, and cost. Here are the answers to the three most common planning questions:

When is the Best Time to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean is a year-round destination, but the experience changes significantly by season:

December to April – Caribbean High / Peak Season

    • Driest weather, steady trade winds (15-25 knots), optimal visibility, and the most busy anchorages.
    • Highest rates.
    • Guaranteed perfect weather, sailing enthusiasts, and holiday travel.

May & November – End & Beginning / Shoulder Seasons

    • Excellent weather with lower humidity, gentler breezes, fewer crowds and things start to slow down.
    • Lower charter rates.
    • Value, relaxed cruising, and avoiding the peak holiday rush.

June to October – Summer / Low Season

    • Warmer temperatures, higher humidity, increased risk of tropical showers & storms (Hurricane Season) so cruising areas tends to be South Caribbean, outside the Hurricane Belt.
    • The best value, calmest seas for water sports, and solitude in anchorages.

Caribbean vs. Mediterranean: Choosing Your Cruising Style

Charter clients often ask which destination is right for them. While both offer luxury cruising, they provide fundamentally very different experiences. If you can not do both and have to choose, this short guide might help you to determine which cruising style matches your perfect vacation vision:

The Caribbean Charter
Main season is December to April (Winter Dry Season)

In the Caribbean your primary vibe is a relaxed, “Shoes Off,” with ample beautiful beaches, focus on water sports, nature and local Caribbean island flair, yet with top end fine dining possibilities. Islands are fairy close and cruising conditions are more consistent allowing for interesting island hopping.

The Mediterranean Charter
Main season is June to September (Summer Season)

Chic, formal, historical sites, high-end dining ashore, culture, and nightlife governs Mediterranean cruising. Ancient ruins, world-class marinas, high-fashion shopping, and fine dining in ample supply. Here it is more about cruising specific coastlines and waters like the French / Italian Riviera,  Amalfi Coast, the Balearics, the Ionians, etc. exploring one area / culture at the time.

What is the Budget for a Luxury Crewed Charter?

Although some Caribbean based yachts works with an all-inclusive rate, many luxury, private and crewed charter yachts work with all-exclusive rates.

    • Standard Caribbean Terms:
The charter fee quoted to you will include yacht, crew wages, all meals, water-sports toys and all equipment on yacht, fuel and water. This agreement is used for many Caribbean based sail and power yachts.
    • Western Mediterranean Terms
The charter fee quoted to you will include yacht, yachts insurance and equipment, crew, crew meals. The charterer will be charged at cost for all other expenses, including food and beverages, fuel, berthing fees etc.
