A Summer Celebration: Your Guide to Caribbean Carnivals by Yacht
The Caribbean is synonymous with hot weather, sun, sea and sailing. But for those in the know, summer in the Caribbean archipelago is also the season of Carnival – a vibrant, cultural explosion of music, color and tradition. A luxury yacht charter is the perfect way to experience these legendary celebrations, allowing you to immerse yourself in the festivities before retreating to your private, tranquil sanctuary on the water.
The Heartbeat of the Caribbean
Caribbean carnivals and festivities are powerful expressions of Caribbean history and cultural identity, blending African, European and indigenous traditions.
“Mas” is short for “masquerade,” and to “play mas” means to participate in the carnival festivities by wearing a costume. It’s an integral part of Caribbean carnival culture with deep historical and cultural roots.
The tradition of “mas” dates back to the late 18th century with French plantation owners holding masquerade balls. Enslaved Africans, who were excluded from these events, developed their own parallel celebrations. After emancipation in 1838, when they were freed, they reclaimed and transformed the masquerade into a celebration of their freedom and cultural heritage.
The costumes and characters are a blend of African, European and indigenous traditions.
While traditional “Old Mas” still exists – with characters often representing social commentary, historical figures, or folklore and some of the oldest being satirical parodies of plantation owners and the colonial elite – mas has evolved over time. Now you also have “Pretty Mas,” which is known for its elaborate costumes with feathers, beads and glittering bikinis.
Carnivals & Festivals
While many know of Trinidad’s famous festival, it is not the only one. Many other islands also have this tradition and you’ll find yourself swept up in the rhythm of calypso music and soca, the infectious sound of steel bands and the joyful parades.
- Crop Over in Barbados: This festival, originally a celebration of the sugar cane harvest, is one of the most popular and colorful events in the Caribbean. It typically runs from June to the first Monday of August, culminating in Grand Kadooment Day. This final parade is a stunning spectacle of masquerade bands in elaborate costumes adorned with feathers, jewels and sequins, all dancing through the streets of Bridgetown and its surroundings to the infectious rhythms of calypso and soca music.
- Antigua Carnival – “The Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival”: This carnival, held annually from late July to the first Tuesday in August, is a jubilant celebration of emancipation. An eleven-day extravaganza, dubbed “the Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival,” is an explosion of color, music, and dance. From the pre-dawn street party of J’ouvert (opening event) to the stunning, feather-filled Parade of Bands, the energy is nonstop. Revelers and masqueraders fill the streets, dancing to the rhythms of soca and calypso, creating a vibrant, joyous atmosphere that culminates in a grand finale known as Last Lap.
- Canouan Carnival: Takes place in July/August, an electrifying experience of the Canouan summer with non-stop vibes, music and culture on the beaches, streets and in the villages.
- Tortola Emancipation Festival: A Celebration of Freedom – While technically in the British Virgin Islands, the Tortola Emancipation Festival is a must-visit for many yacht charter guests in the region. Held from late July to early August, this festival celebrates the abolition of slavery in 1834. The event is a unique blend of historical reflection and joyous festivity, with calypso competitions, pageants and food fairs. The highlight is the Grand Parade and the Rise and Shine Tramp (J’ouvert), where locals and visitors alike dance through the streets in a powerful and moving display of freedom and cultural pride.
- Spicemas in Grenada: Held in July and August, Grenada’s carnival, “Spicemas,” is a tribute to the island’s famous spice production. It’s renowned for its unique traditions, especially Grenada’s Jab Jab, where masqueraders, covered in black oil or charcoal and wearing horned helmets and chains, parade the streets as part of the early morning J’ouvert. The festival is a celebration of Grenadian identity, with a strong focus on traditional Mas, calypso and soca music.
- Culturama in Nevis: The island of Nevis hosts its own summer carnival, “Culturama”, from late July to early August. This festival is a celebration of Nevisian heritage and culture, featuring everything from street jams and parades to calypso competitions and theatrical performances.
Caribbean Carnival Tips
Carnival dates are booked well in advance, so make sure you book early.
The carnivals are street parties and they are busy and HOT! Sunscreen, shades and hats for daytime activities are a must. Comfortable shoes are another must; you will be walking and dancing, a lot. Do not forget to stay hydrated, so bring a water bottle.
There will be a lot of people, so wear casual clothing. To be safe, make sure you do not carry expensive watches or jewellery, don’t walk in secluded areas, and be aware of pickpockets. Bring a cell phone (in a waterproof pouch) to reconnect with your friends if you get separated.
Do as the locals do – carry a flag (rag/handkerchief) to wave,
and HAVE FUN!
